A Major in Global Affairs Prepares Students for Success in the Workplace and in the Global Community

As societies become increasingly interdependent, global affairs are becoming a more important area of study. A major in global affairs equips students to make a meaningful contribution to the world as citizens and leaders.

The field of global affairs encompasses a broad range of topics including diplomacy, foreign policy, economic development, human rights, and international organizations. The study of these topics requires a multidisciplinary approach that combines perspectives from the social sciences, humanities, and natural sciences. The major offers an unparalleled opportunity to acquire a unique skill set that prepares Yale graduates for success in the workplace and as a contributing citizen of the global community.

Conflicts over territory, religion, ideology, resources, and power have been a constant throughout human history. With geopolitical tensions rising, AI transforming warfare, and nuclear threats ever present, understanding why war persists is an urgent and essential question for humanity.

A large number of courses are offered that explore the field of global affairs, from introductory courses to advanced seminars and research methods. The most common areas of focus are political science, history, and sociology; however, the program also includes offerings in anthropology, economics, and law.

As part of the major, students take Great Decisions, America’s largest discussion program on international issues, as well as participate in a capstone project or a substantive seminar. Study abroad options are available, with DUS approval. Students wishing to do a summer or term-time course abroad should consult the DUS as early as possible.
